Collection: BMW E36 Coilovers & Suspension

Choosing coilovers for your BMW E36

The E36 3 Series (1992-1999) was sold as a sedan, coupe, convertible, the hatchback Compact (318ti) and the E36 M3, and the Z3 roadster and coupe use E36-based suspension too. The Compact uses a different rear suspension from other E36 cars, and M3 kits are often listed separately, so check the model and years in each product title.

For drift builds, SLR lists Drift Spec, BOSS Drift Spec and 2-way adjustable Drift Spec MAX coilovers for the E36, plus Compact and M3 versions. SF Racing lists Sport, Track and N2 coilovers and air struts for E36 sedans and coupes, the M3, the Compact and the Z3, with some kits offered with a true rear setup. ISR Performance Pro Series, Godspeed and Megan Racing kits are also listed.

Lowering an E36 changes camber, so adjustable camber plates and rear camber arms help dial in alignment, and adjustable sway links let you set sway bar preload after lowering. Plan on an alignment after any suspension change.

BMW E36 Coilovers & Suspension FAQ

Do E36 coilovers fit the E36 Compact and M3?
Not always. The E36 Compact (318ti) uses a different rear suspension from other E36 cars, and M3 kits are often listed separately. Check the model and years in the product title before ordering.
What does true rear mean on E36 coilovers?
The factory E36 rear uses a separate spring and shock. A true rear setup mounts the spring around the rear shock like a full coilover. Check the product notes for any installation requirements.
Do I need camber plates on a lowered E36?
Many lowered E36s use adjustable camber plates to set front camber, especially for track or drift. Street cars with a moderate drop may not need them.
Do I need an alignment after installing coilovers?
Yes. Plan on an alignment after any ride height or arm change.
