Are cheap coilovers worth it?

For most daily drivers, yes, as long as the kit comes from a brand that publishes spring rates, damping adjustment and fitment for your car. The difference between a $750 kit and a $1,095 kit is usually in spring rate options, adjustment range, top mounts and parts support, not in whether the car gets lower.

Where cheap kits go wrong is unknown brands with no listed specs. Common complaints with those are harsh, bouncy rides from stiff springs paired with weak damping, leaking seals, and adjusters that seize. Stick with brands that list real specs and sell spare parts.

What you give up with cheaper coilovers

  • Ride quality. Budget kits often ship with springs stiffer than a street car needs. Check the rates against our spring rate calculator.
  • Adjustment. Fewer damping clicks, or none at all on some base kits. That is fine for a daily driver.
  • Top mounts. Pillow ball mounts add steering feel but more cabin noise. Rubber mounts are quieter.
  • Parts support. Pricier lines are more likely to have rebuild parts. Godspeed lists spare top mounts and hardware for MonoSS.

How to pick a budget kit

  1. Match the exact chassis code, drivetrain and trim.
  2. Pick the softest spring rates offered if comfort matters.
  3. Make sure damping is adjustable, even if it is a single adjuster.
  4. Plan your ride height and check wheel fitment with the wheel offset calculator.
  5. Leave money for the extras below.

What else to budget for

  • Installation. Coilovers arrive assembled, so it is a bolt-out, bolt-in job on most cars. If you aren't set up with jack stands and a torque wrench, use a shop.
  • An alignment. Required after any drop.
  • Camber parts on bigger drops. See camber and alignment kits.
  • Adjustable end links to level the sway bar. See sway bar end links.

When springs are the smarter budget move

If you only want a modest drop and your shocks are healthy, lowering springs cost $189 to $289 for most sets, far less than any coilover kit. You give up adjustable height and damping. Read coilovers vs lowering springs and how much it costs to lower a car.

FAQ

What is the cheapest coilover brand?

On our store, Godspeed MonoSS kits at $750 are usually the cheapest complete kits for popular cars. Five8 kits start lower on a few Toyota and Lexus models, and Megan Racing sits at $849 to $899.

Are cheap coilovers worth it?

For a daily driver, a budget kit from a brand that lists spring rates and damping adjustment is usually enough. If you track the car often, a track-focused kit is worth the extra money.

Do cheap coilovers ride rough?

They can, mainly because of stiff spring rates. Pick the softest rates offered and set the damping on the soft side for the street.

How long do budget coilovers last?

It depends on the brand, mileage and roads. Kits from brands that sell rebuild parts can be serviced, while no-name kits are often replaced when they leak.

Are lowering springs cheaper than coilovers?

Yes. Most lowering spring sets on our store cost $189 to $289, compared with $737 and up for the cheapest complete coilover kits.
