Collection: Detroit Speed

Detroit Speed suspension, steering and chassis parts for classic GM muscle cars and trucks, plus some Fox-era Ford parts: anti-roll bars, caster camber kits, control arms, coilover kits, springs, leaf spring hardware and shocks. We list 29 parts from $86.99 for mini-tub shock plates to $1,880.99 for a coilover kit. Comparing classic chassis brands? See Classic Performance.

Who Detroit Speed is

Detroit Speed sells what it calls "American-Made Performance Parts for Classic & Modern Muscle." Its site says it grew out of pro-touring racing, builds complete suspension systems alongside hard-to-find parts like mini tubs, and uses hydroforming to get late-model fit and finish on classic cars. Its systems include the SpeedRay front suspension for 1963-82 Corvettes and QUADRALink rear suspension. The platform list covers GM A-, B-, F-, G- and X-Body cars, C10 trucks, Chevy II and Nova, C2 and C3 Corvettes, S10 and Sonoma trucks, 1999-2007 Silverado and Sierra, and Ford F-100, Falcon, Comet and Mustang.

Lower HQ is not a Detroit Speed dealer and has no relationship with the brand. Our Detroit Speed catalog is small: 29 parts. Most are individual parts and components rather than complete subframe or rear suspension systems, so this page is the place to find a specific part number more than a full chassis kit.

Fitment coverage

Many of our Detroit Speed titles show only the part number, not the car. The listings that name a vehicle cover:

  • 1964-77 GM A-Body (Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Skylark): stock replacement front shocks.
  • 1967-69 F-Body and 1968-74 X-Body (Camaro, Firebird, Nova): stock replacement front shocks.
  • 1982-92 Camaro and Firebird: caster camber plate kit.
  • 1980-89 Ford: caster camber kit.
  • 1982-93 Ford and Mercury: tubular anti-roll bar.
  • 1962-68 Chevrolet: Detroit Tuned steering rack.
  • 1982-03 S10: lowering block kit.

If you have a part number from Detroit Speed's catalog, search it on our store. If you only know your car, send us the year and model through the contact page and we'll check the listing for you. For lowered trucks, see our C10 lowering kits and our guide to what a C-notch is.

How to choose Detroit Speed parts

Start with the car's role

A classic that cruises and goes to shows needs good shocks, a stiffer front bar and fresh steering parts. A pro-touring car that sees autocross or track days needs alignment range first, then control arms and coilovers. Buy in that order and you won't pay twice.

Caster camber kits before big arms

Many classic cars were aligned with little positive caster by modern standards. More caster gives better straight-line stability and more camber as you steer. The caster camber kits and plates we list add that range on 1980s Ford and third gen Camaro and Firebird chassis without new control arms.

Leaf spring hardware for leaf-sprung cars

On leaf-sprung F-Body, X-Body and trucks, drop hangers and pocket kits change ride height and how the leaf locates the axle. Detroit Speed sells leaf springs, hangers, mounts, adjustable pads and pocket kits separately, so check which pieces a kit needs before you order one part. Our drop shackles and hangers page has more options.

Sway bars

A tubular front bar is one of the biggest handling gains on a classic, for a few hundred dollars. If you run Detroit Speed QUADRALink in the rear, use the matching QUADRALink anti-roll bar. Compare other bars on our sway bars and end links page.

Detroit Speed vs alternatives we carry

  • Classic Performance Products covers many of the same GM classics with stock-type and tubular control arms, steering linkage kits, coilover conversions and lowering springs, with a much bigger range of steering parts than we carry from Detroit Speed. See Classic Performance.
  • BMR Suspension is strong on G-Body, F-Body and A-Body rear arms and sway bars. See BMR Suspension.
  • QA1 is the deeper choice if you mainly need coilovers and shocks. See QA1.

What else you'll need

  • An alignment after any arm, plate or spring change, set with the new caster range in mind.
  • New steering parts on an old car. Worn tie rod ends cancel out the gains from new arms. See tie rods.
  • Shocks matched to ride height when you lower a classic.

Bolt-on parts like bars, shocks and caster kits are home-garage jobs. Mini tubs, leaf spring pocket kits and some crossmembers need cutting or welding, so plan on a shop. Warranty terms are set by each brand.
