Collection: Sim Racing Handbrakes
A dedicated handbrake makes drift entries, rally hairpins and tight transitions feel natural instead of a button press on the wheel. This guide covers sensor types, mounting and setup so your handbrake gives a smooth, progressive pull every time.
How to choose a sim racing handbrake
Linear hall sensor handbrakes
A linear hall sensor reads the lever's position through a magnet with no physical contact, so the output stays smooth and does not wear like a potentiometer. Because it measures travel, you control lock up by how far you pull. This suits drifting, where you often want a quick, full yank to initiate and then a fast release.
Load cell handbrakes
A load cell measures the force on the lever rather than its position. That makes partial application easier to repeat, which helps rally drivers who modulate the handbrake to rotate the car without fully locking the rear. Load cell units usually need a firmer mount because you pull against resistance.
Lever style and feel
Vertical levers mimic hydraulic drift handbrakes, while angled levers can sit closer to the shifter. Adjustable springs or elastomers change resistance, and a longer lever gives finer control at the cost of more space.
Mounting clamps
A handbrake gets yanked hard, so any wobble is felt straight away. Table clamps work on a solid desk, but a rig mount bolted to aluminum profile or a shifter plate is far more stable. Check that the clamp range fits your desk edge or rig tube.
Handbrake comparison
| Type | Measures | Suits | Mounting need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linear hall sensor | Lever position | Drift initiation and quick pulls | Desk clamp or rig |
| Load cell | Pull force | Rally and partial modulation | Rigid rig mount preferred |
Pairing with your setup
Most handbrakes connect over USB as a standalone HID device, so you bind them as an analog axis in Assetto Corsa, BeamNG.drive, Assetto Corsa Competizione or rally titles, independent of your wheel. Set it as an axis rather than a button for progressive control, then adjust the dead zone so a light touch does nothing. Mount it next to your shifter from our shifters range so your hand moves the same short distance each time. FAQ
Hall sensor or load cell for drifting?
Many drifters prefer a hall sensor handbrake because initiation is usually a quick, full pull. A load cell suits drivers who want finer partial control, which is more common in rally.
Can a handbrake work as a button?
Some units offer a digital mode that sends a button press at a set point. It helps in games that only accept a button, but an analog axis gives better control where it is supported.
Why does my handbrake not show up in game?
Check that the device appears in the operating system's game controller list, then bind it inside the game's controls menu. Some sims need the device connected before they launch.
Will a desk clamp be strong enough?
For a hall sensor handbrake on a thick, solid desk, usually yes. Load cell units and hard pulls benefit from a rig mount, because desk edges flex and clamps can creep.
