Collection: Sim Racing Shifters
A real shifter adds the rhythm of rowing through gears that paddles cannot match, from heel and toe downshifts to a quick sequential pull at corner exit. This guide explains the shifter types, sensors and mounting options so you can match one to the cars you drive.
How to choose a sim racing shifter
H-pattern shifters
An H-pattern shifter reports each gear position as a separate button. Sims that support it, such as Assetto Corsa, iRacing, BeamNG.drive and Euro Truck Simulator 2, then select the gear directly. Pairing it with a clutch pedal and enabling clutch requirements in game adds realism. Look for defined detents, a positive reverse lockout and adjustable throw.
Sequential shifters
A sequential shifter sends one button for upshift and one for downshift, like a rally or touring car. It is simple to set up in almost every sim and pairs well with drift cars that use a sequential box. Some units switch between H-pattern and sequential modes.
Sensors and feel
Basic shifters use microswitches, which give a clear click. Others use hall sensors to read the lever position contactlessly, which reduces wear and lets software adjust where each gear registers. Spring and detent tension determine how mechanical the shift feels.
Truck sim shifter knobs
Truck knobs add range and splitter switches to an H-pattern lever, so you can drive 12 or 18 speed gearboxes in Euro Truck Simulator 2 and similar games. Check that the knob thread or adapter fits your lever.
Mounting
A shifter takes sideways and fore and aft loads. Desk clamps work for light shifting, but a shifter plate bolted to a rig keeps it in the same spot every session.
Shifter comparison
| Type | Signal | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| H-pattern | One button per gear | Road cars, classics, trucks |
| Sequential | Up and down buttons | Rally, touring cars, drift builds |
| Truck knob add on | Range and splitter buttons | Truck and bus sims |
Pairing with your setup
Most shifters connect over USB as their own HID device, so they bind alongside any wheel and pedals. Mount the shifter at roughly the same height as your wheel rim and close enough that your elbow stays bent. Drifters often place a handbrake from our USB handbrakes range directly beside it. If your desk flexes under hard shifts, a rig or shifter plate from wheels, bases and rigs fixes it, and you can browse the full sim racing gear range for the rest of your setup.
FAQ
Do I need a clutch pedal for an H-pattern shifter?
Not strictly. Most sims let you shift without a clutch using assists, but a clutch pedal makes manual cars feel far more realistic and is needed for clutch kick techniques.
Can one shifter do both H-pattern and sequential?
Some shifters have a mode switch or a swappable gate. If you drive both styles often, that saves space on your rig.
Why does the game miss some of my gears?
Each gear needs to be bound individually in the controls menu. Also check the shifter is recognized before the game launches, and recalibrate if it uses hall sensors.
Will a truck knob fit any shifter?
Not always. Knob threads and lever diameters vary, so confirm the thread size or use the adapter supplied with the knob.
