How to choose coil springs
Start with one question: do you want the car or truck to sit at stock height, lower, or higher? That splits this collection into three groups, and each one is built for a different job.
- Stock height replacement. Your springs have sagged, one is cracked, or the car sits lower on one corner. Moog, Mevotech, ACDelco and Dorman make OE-style coils that restore factory height.
- Lowering springs. You want a lower stance and less body roll without the cost of coilovers. Belltech, Whiteline, Hotchkis, Classic Performance, Ridetech and Western Chassis cover trucks, muscle cars and sport compacts.
- Lift and leveling coils. You want more ground clearance, room for bigger tires, or support for a heavy bumper and winch. Carli, Bilstein B12, BDS, Skyjacker, Rancho and Superlift build these.
Once you know the group, match three things: the exact year, cab and drivetrain; front or rear position; and the engine or load. Spring rates change with engine weight, which is why you see separate Hemi and diesel versions of the same Carli coil, and separate 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder Belltech sets for the S-10. Always replace springs in pairs on the same axle so both sides sit at the same height.
Linear, progressive and multi-rate
A linear spring has the same rate through its whole travel. A progressive or variable rate spring gets stiffer as it compresses, so it rides softly empty and firms up under load. Moog sells its Cargo Control coils as variable rate springs for vehicles that carry heavy loads. Carli lists both linear rate and multi rate coils for Ram trucks. If you tow or haul often, a progressive or cargo-rated spring is usually the better choice. For the math behind rates, read spring rate explained.

Signs your coil springs are worn
- The vehicle sits lower than it used to, or lower on one corner.
- The suspension bottoms out over bumps or when loaded.
- The rear squats badly with passengers or cargo.
- A coil is visibly cracked or broken, often near the end where it sits in the perch.
- Tires wear unevenly because the alignment changed as the spring sagged.
A clunk over bumps can also come from worn bushings or mounts. Check those too: see bad control arm bushing symptoms.
What else you'll need
- Shocks or struts. Lowered or lifted vehicles need dampers with the right travel. Belltech, Bilstein and Carli all build matching shocks.
- Bump stops. Lowering cuts travel, so trimmed or shorter bump stops keep the shock from bottoming.
- A spring compressor for strut-type front ends. See our spring compressors.
- Strut mounts and isolators if the old ones are cracked. See strut mounts.
- An alignment after any spring change, because ride height changes camber and toe.
Install notes
On a solid rear axle with the coil sitting between the axle and frame, a spring swap is a driveway job with jack stands. Front coils on control-arm trucks and any coil inside a strut assembly hold a lot of stored energy, so use a proper compressor or let a shop do it. Lowered trucks may need a C-notch for axle clearance when you go past a few inches: see what is a C-notch and how to lower a truck.
Costs
OE-style replacement coils run $83 to $378 in our stock. Some are sold each and some as a pair, so check the listing before you order two. Lowering coil sets mostly cost $199 to $389, with some muscle car sets above $500. Lift coils for heavy-duty trucks run $258 to $682. Add shocks, an alignment and shop labor if you are not doing it yourself.
