Bilstein 4600 shocks: the stock-height upgrade

The Bilstein 4600 (sold as the B6 4600) is Bilstein's direct-fit upgrade over factory shocks for light trucks and SUVs that stay at stock height. Bilstein describes it as a monotube shock with a velocity-sensitive digressive piston, tuned for each vehicle. Its catalog lists a 46mm piston, a 2.0 inch body and a yellow painted finish. "B6" is Bilstein's label for stock-height upgrades, while "B8" (the 5100) marks parts for leveled or lifted trucks.

We list 143 parts on this page. Most single 4600 shocks cost $92 to $214.99 each, and every listing is one shock. A full truck needs two fronts and two rears, which are different part numbers.

Bilstein 4600 vs 5100: which one do you need?

This is the most common question about the 4600, and Bilstein answers it directly. The B6 4600 keeps factory ride height. The B8 5100 ride height adjustable strut lifts the front, and standard 5100s are longer for trucks that are already leveled or lifted. Bilstein also calls the idea that the 5100 is "more heavy duty" a myth: both share the same internals, and the 5100's extra length and zinc plating are the real differences.

If your truck sits at factory height and you plan to keep it there, buy the 4600. If you want to level the front, or the truck already has a lift, go to Bilstein 5100 shocks. For lifted trucks driven hard off road, Bilstein points to the reservoir Bilstein 5160.

How to choose the right Bilstein 4600

  • Stock height only. The 4600 is built for factory ride height. On a 4600 front strut, Bilstein's install sheets show only the stock circlip position.
  • Keep the factory springs. Bilstein says 4600 and 5100 struts are designed around OE coil springs. Aftermarket or lift springs can push the strut past its range.
  • Match drivetrain and trim. F-150 fronts split by RWD and 4WD, and many GM and Toyota parts exclude air or electronic suspension. Check the title and part number.
  • Rears and fronts are separate. Order two of each for a full set.

Install and cost

A rear 4600 shock is usually two bolts per end with the axle supported. A front strut body means removing the strut and moving the factory coil with a spring compressor, and Bilstein's instructions say installation should be done by a professional suspension technician, so many owners have a shop do the fronts. In parts, a full set for a 2019+ Silverado 1500 4WD is $541.50 (two fronts at $128.76, two rears at $141.99), and a 2022+ Frontier set is $467.98. If you are replacing worn shocks on a truck with struts, check the top mounts too: see strut mounts.

Bilstein 4600 Shocks FAQ

What is a Bilstein 4600?
The Bilstein B6 4600 is a monotube gas shock with a 46mm digressive piston, built as a direct-fit upgrade over factory shocks on stock-height light trucks and SUVs. Each part is tuned by Bilstein for the vehicle it fits.
What is the difference between Bilstein 4600 and 5100?
The 4600 keeps factory ride height, while the 5100 is longer for leveled or lifted trucks and comes as a ride height adjustable front strut. Bilstein says both use the same internals, and that the 4600 rides better on a truck kept at stock height.
Are Bilstein 4600 shocks good?
For a truck kept at stock height they are Bilstein's recommended pick. Bilstein says the monotube design gives consistent, fade-free damping and a clear improvement in ride quality, handling and comfort over factory shocks.
Can a Bilstein 4600 lift or level my truck?
No. The 4600 is built for factory ride height, and on 4600 front struts Bilstein's install sheets list only the stock position. For a level, use a B8 5100 ride height adjustable strut.
Are Bilstein 4600 shocks sold in pairs?
No, each listing is one shock. Front and rear are different part numbers, so a full truck takes two of each.
Can I use Bilstein 4600 struts with aftermarket springs?
Bilstein says its 4600 and 5100 struts are designed for factory coil springs, and aftermarket or lift springs can push them outside their working range. Keep the stock springs.
Do Bilstein 4600 shocks fit the 4Runner?
We list the B6 4600 front (24-329064) for the 2010-24 4Runner, 2010-14 FJ Cruiser and Lexus GX460, and fronts for the 1996-2002 4Runner.
